PS: Fort Jesus does not have any direct connection to Jesus Christ. The name “Jesus” in the fort’s title likely comes from a different source. Here are some possibilities:

• Religious Affiliation of the Builders: The Portuguese, who built the fort, were a very religious society and often named their endeavors after religious figures. It’s possible they named it after Jesus Christ to reflect their faith or to seek divine protection for the fort.
• “Jesus” as a Reference to “Savior”: In some contexts, “Jesus” can be used more generally to mean “savior” or “protector.” Perhaps the name was chosen to signify the fort’s role in safeguarding the Portuguese presence on the Swahili coast.
• Order of Christ: The Portuguese who built the fort may have been affiliated with the Order of Christ, a Portuguese knightly order connected to the Catholic Church. It’s possible they named the fort after the order itself, which might have been shortened to simply “Jesus” for convenience.
